League Cup Final
Roman Glass St George 2 Shirehampton Sunday 4
The Cup Final was contested between 2 well matched teams, Roman Glass St George and Shirehampton Sunday. For the first 10 minutes their was little to choose between them with the only danger coming from a couple of powerful runs down the right from Tom Price for Roman Glass. However as Shirehampton settled into their game they began to get the upper hand and on twelve minute won a free kick and a great strike from Dan Griffith struck the bar. Alex West came in from the blind side to put the ball into the net. For the rest of the half Roman Glass struggled to contain Shirehampton and on 32minutes they doubled their goal tally when Alex West turned on a bobbling ball in the goal mouth and put it passed the keeper for a goal. Shortly after Roman Glass had their best chance of the half but they failed to squeeze the ball into the goal. With half time approaching a free kick from Charlie Harris was volleyed towards goal by Joe Holt but Jon Mitchell in the Glass goal just managed to push the ball wide and deny Shirehampton their third goal. This reprieve proved to be short lived as minutes later Roman Glass handled the ball in the penalty area and Matty McCall scored from the spot to give his side a comfortable lead and Roman Glass a mountain to climb in the second half. After the break Roman Glass appeared to be a different team and came out in a positive mood and with greater determination. After 15 minutes they had grabbed a goal back as they came much more into the game. A good move and cross from the right found Billy England who pushed the ball goal wards. The final ball that found the back of the net was put their by a defender. Roman Glass at this stage were gaining the upper hand and believing that they were still in with a chance. On the half hour they almost scored a second as Tom Price crossed to Joel Hartley whose shot was just saved. Five minutes later Roman Glass did get the goal that their play deserved when Billy England pounced on a ball that had rebounded off a defender and scored. Roman Glass pressed forward for the equaliser but were undone by a quick break out from defence by Shirehampton which resulted in a Jack McKenna goal from which there was no way back for Roman Glass. Overall a great game, well refereed by Dave Bryant, and played in a sporting manner that was a credit to both teams.
League Plate Final
Full Circle 2 St Nicholas 3
The first half of this Plate Final between Full Circle and St Nicholas was a well balanced, evenly contested game. The first chance of a score fell to Full Circle after 15 minutes with a well placed shot across the goal that St Nicholas’s goalkeeper Sam Curry just kept out with a finger tip save. Not to be outdone shortly after Jon Wilmot had a good opportunity to put St Nicholas ahead but he fluffed his shot and all his good work came to nothing. On the half hour Jonny Ruff opened the scoring for St Nicholas with a great left footed free kick from 30 yards out that sailed over the defenders heads and into the corner of the net. St Nicholas finished the half strongly and almost increased their lead when a pin point cross from Jon Wilmot found the head of Jonny Ruff but the ball hit the bottom of the upright. After the break Full Circle came out with all guns blazing and within 2 minutes, as the spectators were still settling down, Leon Grange had equalised from a free kick from 20 yards out. Full Circle were now gradually gaining the upper hand and they had at least 2 great opportunities to take the lead as they broke clear through the centre of the St Nicholas defence but then failed to get a telling shot on goal. Midway through the half took they did take the lead with a left footed shot from Josh Andrews into the bottom corner of the goal that gave the keeper no chance. Within minutes of scoring Full Circle tried for a repeat their earlier goal from a free kick but this time Leon Grange was unable to find the net. With time running out, and on the balance of play, it looked odds on that Full Circle would win this final. However St Nicholas kept on trying and were rewarded when a Jonny Ruff shot from an acute angle was pushed up onto the bar by the Full Circle keeper and it bounced into the goal before the defenders could react. Within 2 minutes St Nicholas had taken the lead when an initial shot hit the bar and Danny Ruff was first to react and poke the ball into the net. In the dying minutes Full Circle thought that they had grabbed an equaliser to take the game into extra time but the goal was ruled out as the player was offside. St Nicholas had survived and won the Plate Final by the smallest of margins.
Division A
Congratulations to Gala Wilton who with this win in their final game of the season take the Division A title.
St Vallier 1 Gala Wilton 2
This was a very entertaining, fast and furious match. St Vallier put up a brilliant performance with lots of good moves but Gala Wilton generally seemed to have the better of the play, quick to attack and strong in defence. St Vallier had Matt Bradley and Phil Harrington up front who had good support from Swayze Diamond on the right and Scott Phelps on the left. In the middle were Jermain Hughes, Adam James and at the back Dan Turell, Tom Ferris, Alex Morris and Jason Barter. This week’s goalkeeper was Rich Sage. The game started with Mike Diamond standing in for the first ten minutes for referee Steve Martin who was delayed getting to the game. Gala Wilton had a player booked for arguing with the referee mid way through the first half as the ref took firm control on the game. Gala Wilton’s first goal came a minute before the half time whistle when the ball skidded across the wet surface of the goal mouth under Rich Sage. The second half continued at the same high tempo as the first half ended and St Vallier replaced Phil Harrington with Dean Dagger. 20 minutes into the half the referee awarded a free kick to Gala Wilton after a foul by Dan Turell. Jason Barter disputed the decision and was sent off for swearing. St Vallier now down to 10 men battled on even harder and there were some great efforts and combinations by Dagger, Phelps, Hughes and Bradley. 30 minutes into the second half Adam James was substituted by Tobi Akinsola and two minutes later St Vallier equalised with a great shot from Dean Dagger. A few minutes later St Vallier could have taken the lead when Tobi Akinsola found himself one on one with the Gala Wilton goalie but the shot was parried away for a throw in. St Vallier carried on the pressure with Matt Bradley and Scott Phelps finding themselves in good positions only to be denied by good defending from Gala Wilton. 5 minutes before full time Gala Wilton thought they had won the match when they headed the ball past Sage but the goal was ruled offside. Then right at the death, Gala Wilton had a run on goal and their player to be brought down in the box by Sage and the penalty was converted seconds before the final whistle was blown. A very good game that St Vallier didn't deserve to lose. The Gala Wilton Goal scorers were Steven Hutchins and Daniel Avent.
