On Thursday North Leigh completed their program with an 8-0 win at AFC Wallingford to go top in the Premier Division, Chris Allen and Mark Simms each scored four times to lead the table with a one goal advantage over long time leaders Almondsbury Town. The last day of the season saw Almondsbury Town needing a point at lowly Abingdon Town who, themselves, needed a win to climb out of the relegation positions. Abingdon won thanks to a 61st minute goal from Richard Wells after having a first half penalty saved by ‘Almonds keeper Danny Holdcroft. This defeat dashed the promotion push that Almondsbury have headed for the majority of the season. Abingdon got the win they needed but it was not enough to haul Abingdon out of the fourth relegation position as Kidlington and Carterton drew 1-1 which ensured safety for Carterton. Hungerford Town finished the season in style with a 5-1 win at home to Lydney Town with Ian Concannon adding four goals to his tally. Shortwood Utd and Highworth Town drew 1-1 with Matt Bennett scoring an 80th minute penalty to equalise Kevin Coles, 2nd half opener, for Highworth, Shortwood finish 5th and Highworth 6th. The Division One West Championship Shield was on show to the excellent crowd of 175 but it was not until a minute from the break that Winterbourne took the lead with a Jimmy Potts penalty. The second half saw Potts add his second two minutes after Justin Bishop made it 2-0. A minute later Mitch Tippins got the first of his brace adding the second ten minutes later in the 68th minute. Old Woodstock Town played their last match on Thursday evening beating Cricklade Town 2-0 and finish in second place and can look forward to promotion as Letcombe were unable to get the win they needed for runner-up place after drawing 1-1 at Tytherington Rocks who took a 1st half lead through Danny Thompson after 30 minutes but Richard Claydon levelled on the hour. Paul Shanley signed off as Trowbridge Town manager with a 5-1 win against Wootton Bassett Town with Scott Askew scoring a hat trick in the first half hour. Oxford City Nomads beat Purton 2-1 for a mid table finish.
The Division One East title was won by Chalfont Wasps a few weeks ago and their form since has suffered badly with just one win in their last six league outings and losing the only three matches they have been on the wrong end of the score line in the league during the season. The final match at Binfield saw the points shared after Danny Wing gave the home team the lead in the 26th minute. With fourteen minutes left Lee Thompson netted an equaliser. Marlow Utd finished just seven points behind in second place and will be promoted to the Premier Division along with Wasps after a 2-1 win at Chinnor with two goals in the last fifteen minutes from Chris Rowley and Lewis Brown after Mark James had opened the scoring for Chinnor in the 25th minute. Ascot Utd finished a creditable first season in the competition in 4th place with a 6-3 win at Kintbury Rangers that saw Sam McIntyre score four times. Thame Utd signed off with a 2-1 win against Henley Town with Matt Leach and Paul Searle scoring either side of a John Donegan goal for Henley. Eton Wick finished bottom of the pack but battled to the end and although they went down 3-5 at home to Rayners Lane the club intend to strengthen the playing staff for next season having already done so with the club’s ‘off field’ management.
